EAST ROCKAWAY - Village of East Rockaway officials say the resignation of Fire Chief Steven Torborg was related to an extramarital affair.

According to the village, Torborg used his department vehicle to conduct the alleged affair. Village officials say the GPS on Torborg's car tracked him to a wooded area near the Meadowbrook Parkway. A private investigator was eventually hired to look into the situation.

Officials say Torborg was linked to the field 12 times, as well as to the Pine Motor Lodge in Westbury for three hours one night.

Torborg was asked to resign, but village officials say he then released a different version of the story to friends and supporters on his Facebook page. The mayor then sent a letter to the East Rockaway Fire Council detailing the village's version of the story.

Torborg issued a statement to News 12 Long Island dismissing the village's version of the story. "The allegations of the report that has been anonymously mailed to the news media give an inaccurate and incomplete picture of the circumstances surrounding my resignation," he says.

Torborg officially resigned as fire chief on March 22.
