East Islip High mourns student's death from meningitis

EAST ISLIP - Family and friends are in mourning after an East Islip High School senior died mere days from graduation.

Kimberly Coffey died Friday from bacterial meningitis. The 17-year-old had been hospitalized for a week.

Health officials say that the disease is highly contagious but that it is safe to attend school at the building because the incubation period for the disease has passed.

Coffey's funeral is tomorrow at St. Mary's Church in East Islip. Coffey had planned to study medicine at Molloy College in the fall.
