EAST ISLIP - A 9-year-old East Islip girl is battling back against an illness that affects only 1 in 200,000 children.

Taylor Ryan suffers from a very rare cancer-like disease called histiocytosis. Last year, doctors discovered a lesion on her brain and she now undergoes chemotherapy once a month for four straight days.

Since Taylor began chemotherapy months ago, the lesion on her brain hasn't grown, which her family says is a positive step.

Her mother says doctors admit they are still in the learning process about the disease and it has been hard to raise awareness about it, because of how few children are affected.
