SAGAPONACK - Sagaponack is already known for its potatoes. Soon, it may be known for its vodka.

Dean Foster, an East End land owner, hopes to create “Sagaponack Spirits” on a 13-acre parcel of land in the middle of a residential neighborhood.

His plan includes a 30-liter twin column distillery that would generate an estimated 400 gallons of vodka each year. He hopes to sell his products to stores, bars and restaurants.

Some neighbors say that a distillery could be a problem for groundwater and could create a high-traffic area.

Foster and the concerned residents spoke about the plan during a Southampton Town Board meeting Thursday. Foster is hoping for a “special exception” from the board to get his business up and running.

He told News 12 that the distillery is still in its earliest planning stages.
