RIVERHEAD - A new proposal to expand a gas terminal on the East End has been met with mixed opinions.

United Riverhead Terminal is a 20-tank oil terminal surrounded by farms and homes in the community of Northville. The company now wants to expand and get into the gasoline business.

Councilman John Dunleavy says one concern surrounding the proposal is an increase in traffic.

Residents packed a public meeting on the plan last month. Company representatives told the crowd that they want to store gas pumped in through a pipeline from the Long Island Sound. They are also applying for a permit to build two new tanks, so that ethanol can be mixed into the fuel.

Some residents think the proposal is a good one.

Kevin Beyer, head of the Long Island Gasoline Retailers Association, told News 12, "I think it's good for Suffolk County. After what happened during Superstorm Sandy, the facilities that were able to provide gasoline were very limited. Having another facility to go to is a good thing."

The company told residents at the public meeting that the move would create jobs and have a minimal impact on traffic.

No date has been set yet for a vote on the proposal.
