WOODBURY - Many Long Island residents completed their Black Friday shopping early thanks to the biggest retailers staying open on Thanksgiving.

More than a dozen stores at the Roosevelt Field Mall opted to remain open Thursday, and crowds responded by making a beeline to the biggest doorbuster savings. The general consensus among shoppers on Friday was that it was crowded but tolerable.

Black Friday sales dropped 1.8 percent last year following Thanksgiving Day sales. With far more retailers being open this year, it could take a larger chunk out of the Black Friday shopping numbers.
