EAST ISLIP - Students at an East Islip elementary school got some help from a local artist to make a mosaic for their school that captures some traditional Long Island scenery. The kids at John F. Kennedy Elementary School teamed up with artist Katherine Hanley for the project. Before school ended for the summer, the students painted tiles with beach scenes. The tiles were then broken up, and the kids have spent hours fitting the tiny shards together to create the mosaic of a lighthouse on the coast. A builder with Fire Island Contracting volunteered to build the 8-foot mahogany frame to set the mosaic in. After the artwork is completed this week, it will be permanently on display outside the school.
