CALVERTON - The fall harvest is one of the busiest times of the year for East End farmers, but the extremely dry weather is causing problems for many.

Farmers have been working around the clock to water their crops by moving big irrigation pipes throughout their fields.

This not only adds to labor costs, but fuel costs as well because the systems are run by pumps that use diesel fuel.

"Probably a few thousand gallons a month at least," says Jeff Rottkamp, of Rottkamp's Fox Hollow Farms. "It's a lot of work and a lot of expense, but it's been dry so we have no disease, so the quality of the crop is nice."

Farmers hope that Mother Nature will give them some more rain to make it easier during the fall harvest.
