WESTHAMPTON - The dangerously dry conditions on Long Island contributed to two brush fires Monday.

Chopper 12 was over a fire that burned out of control near Bourdois and Brookhaven avenues in North Bellport.

In Westhampton, a total of 10 fire departments also responded to a raging brush fire on Old Riverhead Road. Westhampton Beach Fire Department Assistant Chief Bill Dalton said it took two hours and more than 60 firefighters to douse the stubborn fire.

The fire, which started around 10:30 a.m., burned through about five acres of land.

Firefighters say they suspect that the fire could have been caused by a cigarette, but Suffolk fire marshals are investigating the exact cause of the fire.
