PATCHOGUE - A train hit a car on the tracks at Rider Avenue in Patchogue Tuesday morning.
Officials say an eastbound train leaving Babylon at around 11:30 a.m. struck the unauthorized vehicle on the tracks.
The driver of the vehicle was taken to Brookhaven Memorial Hospital. Wayne Berry, who witnessed the crash and spoke with the victim, says the driver was “pretty phased” but alert after the incident. A responding officer says the driver barely had a scratch on his body after his car was smashed and hurled into the side of Swezey Fuel Company.
Officials at the scene say the driver told an EMS worker that his car skidded on ice. Berry says the gates were down as the driver approached the tracks.
The train was heading east toward Speonk from the Patchogue station. None of the 13 passengers on board were hurt.
The incident comes after Monday’s crash in East Rockaway when a woman stopped her SUV on the tracks. The back of the SUV was hit by a LIRR train, but the woman survived.
