Driver sentenced in fatal DWI wrong-way crash

QUEENS - A drunken driver was sentenced today to three-and-a-half to 10-and-a-half years in prison for a wrong-way crash that killed the driver of an airport shuttle.

Last July, David Richards, of The Bronx, was speeding in the wrong direction on the Long Island Expressway in Queens when he slammed head-on into the van of 64-year-old John Rey, of Huntington.

Richards had pleaded guilty to manslaughter. Before his sentencing today, the presiding judge said he hoped the sentence will serve as a warning or a "preventive measure to anyone who wants to drive home drunk."

Rey's daughters, Courtney Rey and Colleen Rey Cassar, say they plan to push for the passage of state legislation to thwart wrong-way drivers.

"I don't want to see another family suffer the way we did and the way my father did," Colleen Rey Cassar says.
