Driver in fatal Mastic hit-and-run gets up to 4 years

Preston Mimms was sentenced to between 1 and 1/3 years to four years in prison for killing Erika Hughes. (January 4, 2013)

MASTIC - The driver behind the wheel during a deadly hit-and-run was sentenced today.

Preston Mimms, a three-time felon, was sentenced to between 1 and 1/3 years to four years in prison for killing 24-year-old Erika Hughes on a Mastic street on July 29, 2011.

Judge James Hudson ignored District Attorney Tom Spota's request of the maximum 2-7 years and says it's up to the Legislature to pass harsher sentences.

The Hughes family and their friends say they will continue their protests until the laws are toughened.
