HAMPTON BAYS - Dredging of the Shinnecock Inlet is set to begin tonight and last about a month.

The $7.5 million project is expected to restore the inlet back to pre-hurricane standards. Joe Seebode, of the Army Corps of Engineers, says the dredging will remove sand from the inlet and pump it onto the beaches west of the jetty. He adds there is enough work over the next month to move about 500,000 cubic yards of sand onto the beaches.

In addition, Seebode says the project will also improve navigation through the channel.
