CENTRAL ISLIP - A Setauket cardiologist was sentenced Friday to two years in prison for a drunken driving crash that killed a nurse last year.

As News 12 has reported, Dr. Thomas Stavola, 56, admitted to running a red light at East Main Street and Route 111 in Smithtown before crashing into Monica Peterman as she headed to work at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center. He then fled the scene.

Peterman's family addressed Stavola before his sentencing and forgave him for the incident.

"We raise our children to forgive," said Russell Peterman, Monica's husband.

As part of Stavola’s plea deal, Stavola is not eligible for early discharge. He will serve five years of probation upon his release
