ATLANTIC BEACH - Eight beaches on the South Shore of the Island were closed today following the discovery of more than three dozen hypodermic needles in the sand. Needles were found along a mile-and-a-half stretch of land, from El Dorado Beach to Vernon Beach. On Atlantic Beach alone, lifeguards spotted more than two dozen large and small needles that washed ashore.Beachgoers say they are disappointed with the closures, but also concerned over the medical waste. The Nassau County Health Department has instructed lifeguards to pick up any needles that they find. Crews are also scouring nearby Long Beach for needles. It remains unknown if the water will remain off-limits tomorrow as well.
