BOHEMIA - Authorities say 54 people were hospitalized this afternoon after a chemical spill inside a commercial building in Bohemia.
Officials say it happened at C.W.G. Communications on Wilbur Place, a business that cleans and refurbishes cell phones.
According to police, it appears that the company switched to a new cleaning chemical without completely purging its systems from the old one, and when the two mixed, it caused a reaction.
Officials say the affected workers complained of dizziness, trouble breathing and gastrointestinal distress. Some of them even fainted and had to be revived with oxygen, while others vomited.
Dozens of ambulances and a school bus were called in to help transport the victims to three hospitals. Police say none of the people are believed to have life-threatening injuries.
