BRENTWOOD - Dozens of residents of an apartment complex in Brentwood have been displaced following a fire that broke out last week.

Residents at the Brookwood Apartments say a transformer exploded in the basement on Friday, not long after a large truck rolled down their street and pulled down power lines. Investigators are working to determine if there's a connection between the downed wires and the fire.

A total of 32 residents were forced out of their homes. The Red Cross put the affected families up at a nearby hotel for the past three days. But today, residents returning home found the smell of smoke permeating their apartments, and there is no heat, electricity or water.

State Assemblyman Phil Ramos heard about the situation and was able to work out a temporary solution for housing through the Department of Social Services. Residents will get emergency housing for the next few days, until their apartments are once again habitable, Ramos says.

Residents say they hope repairs are made quickly so they can get back in their homes.

Managers with the apartment complex say affected boilers will be repaired by Tuesday, but inspectors still need to deem the units liveable. They hope that will happen by Wednesday.
