EAST MEADOW - Long Island officials are installing a barrier on one of the most dangerous roads for pedestrians.

The state Department of Transportation (DOT) is constructing a pedestrian safety fence on the center median of a stretch of Hempstead Turnpike in East Meadow.

Neighbors are mixed on the plans. Some hope it will make the road safer, while others are unsure if it will discourage people from jaywalking.

The DOT says it plans on installing more safety measures in other places along Hempstead Turnpike.
