MINEOLA - Victims of domestic violence were honored for their courage and perseverance today at an awareness ceremony in Mineola. The Nassau County Police Department says calls about domestic violence have dropped nearly 4 percent while arrests have gone up. While statistics seem to show domestic violence on the decline, red silhouettes at the ceremony were a reminder that women in Nassau County are still dying every year from abuse. The Coalition Against Domestic Violence says five Nassau women have died so far in 2012. Freeport mom Felicia Cassadean is the latest victim. Police say she was stabbed to death and set on fire by her husband just last month. The Coalition Against Domestic Violence Director Mindy Perlmutter says abusers need harsher punishments.
