WANTAGH - Three dogs that were found malnourished, abused and neglected have been nursed back to health, and now they're hoping to find forever homes.

The pups were among eight dogs seized last month by the Nassau County District Attorney's Office as part of an investigation into an alleged dogfighting ring. The animals were found in West Hempstead covered in scars, locked in a makeshift shed and chained to a treadmill that they were forced to run upon. Investigators say they were being trained to fight.

The Hempstead Town Animal Shelter has been treating and rehabilitating the dogs. Two of the pit bulls were deemed too aggressive by the ASPCA and had to be put down.

"It's never an easy decision to euthanize an animal," says Stacie DaBolt, of the Hempstead Animal Shelter, "especially when its not their fault and they're just an innocent soul out there in the wrong hands, and are turned into broken dogs."

Two of the rescued dogs were taken by rescue groups, one pup was adopted, and the final three are looking for loving homes.

DaBolt says they will need some extra TLC because of what they went through, but adds that they will eventually make great family pets.
