ROCKY POINT - As the saying goes, dogs are a man's best friend, but for 49-year-old Linda Rubino, her dog is also her hero.
Rubio had heart surgery a year ago and after the surgery began suffering mini-strokes. In early February, Rubino suffered a major stroke and collapsed to the floor.
Rubino's German shepherd April immediately came to her assistance by starting to lick her, which husband Tony Rubino says kept her mouth clear and kept her from gagging.
Rubino was discovered by her husband an hour after suffering the stroke and rushed her to the hospital, where she spent 30 days recuperating.
