HUNTINGTON - A dog is being credited for alerting a sleeping family to a fire in their Huntington home.

The flames erupted at the two-story home on Dumbarton Drive at around 1:40 a.m.  Roxanne, the Herlihy family's 5-year-old English bulldog, started barking loudly and nudging the couple's son.

The son woke up, alerted his parents and they called 911 as they ran out.

Nearly 50 firefighters using seven trucks responded to the fire, officials say. Huntington firefighters were assisted by crews from neighboring Halesite, Cold Spring Harbor, Huntington Manor and Greenlawn fire departments.

No one was injured. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The Herlihys have been told their home is now uninhabitable.
