NORTHPORT - Tens of thousands of veterans are waiting months for doctors appointments, according to a recent report by the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The study looked at 731 hospitals and outpatient clinics. Some were found to falsify appointment schedules to make patients' waits appear shorter.

The VA in Northport was part of the investigation. Joe Sledge, with the Northport VA, says their staff is trained to follow procedures for scheduling and receive mandatory training each year.

“We monitor our appointments closely through our business office,” Sledge told News 12.

Sledge says their veterans have a wait time of approximately 23 days for their first primary care visit. That is much less than what’s being nationally reported.

According to the report, 57,000 veterans are waiting three months for their first doctor's visit. An additional 64,000 appear to have fallen through the cracks, never getting appointments after enrolling.
