SHOREHAM - The Rocky Point man who allegedly drove while on drugs and caused a crash that injured a young mother pleaded not guilty today.

Police say 24-year-old Dennis Karachopan was on heroin when he crossed into oncoming traffic on Route 25A in Shoreham yesterday. His red BMW crashed into a car carrying a 23-year-old mother and her 3-week-old newborn baby.

Officials say the baby was apparently uninjured in the crash, but the mother remains in serious condition at the hospital.

Witnesses at the scene tell News 12 Long Island that they were concerned because the baby remained silent and didn't cry, despite the devastating impact that left both cars virtually unrecognizable.

Witnesses add that Karachopan, who has a previous drug arrest, was recognized by police. They say that responding officers made him get down on his knees and watch as rescue crews worked for more than an hour to remove the young mother from her car.

Karachopan was arraigned today for driving under the influence of drugs, and his bail was set at $10,000. He's due back in court on Wednesday.
