CENTRAL ISLIP - The defense for former Suffolk police Sgt. Scott Greene wrapped its case Tuesday without calling a single witness.

Greene is facing 21 grand jury charges, including stealing money from over two dozen motorists, official misconduct and hate crimes against Latino drivers.

Latino Justice lawyer Nancy Trasande, who helped gather victims in the case, says immigrants were targeted in traffic stops.

Greene was caught on video during a 2014 sting operation conducted by police and the Suffolk district attorney.

"Undocumented Hispanics normally carry large amounts of cash," says Trasande. "They don't have checking accounts and that was an opportunity for [Greene], given his financial circumstances, to obtain money from them during those stops."

Defense attorney Scott Gross says Greene may have been caught stealing on the sting video, but was never proven to be committing a hate crime by the prosecution.

"There's been absolutely no proof that Scott targeted anybody because of their ethnicity or race," says Gross. "This has always been a setup from day one."

If convicted on all of the charges, Greene could face up to 20 years in prison.

Jury deliberations will continue Thursday.
