HICKSVILLE - An NYPD officer from Nassau County was shot on the job last night during a gunfight with a suspect in Jamaica, Queens.Authorities say Sgt. Craig Bier, a highly decorated member of an NYPD anti-gang unit, was hit in both legs when a suspect opened fire near 107th Street. NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly says Bier has earned 65 medals during his 15-year career. News 12 Long Island spoke with the officer's mother, Betty Bier, who says her son is out of surgery and is recovering. She says the family has already lived through another near-miss: her husband is a retired NYPD detective who survived being shot in the face many years ago.Mayor Michael Bloomberg says officer shootings have turned into an epidemic in the city. He says Bier is the 10th city cop shot in the line of duty this year, and the sixth from Long Island. Police say the suspect in the shooting, identified as John Thomas, has been arrested.
