ROSLYN ESTATES - The state is now investigating how a Roslyn Estates well became contaminated with the toxic chemical Freon 22.

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is trying to determine how the refrigerant got into a well on Diana’s Trail.

The water district has shut down the well and put in restrictions to reduce water usage this summer. Plans call for installing a $4 million purification system by the middle of next year.

In a letter sent to Assemblyman Charles Lavine (D-Glen Cove), the DEC says it has information on a possible source of the Freon, but stopped short of specifically identifying it.
