WOODBURY - The death of Robin Williams is putting a spotlight on addiction and depression issues.
According to the National Institutes of Health, 18 million Americans suffer from various forms of depression.
On Long Island, the Families and Children’s Association in Hicksville provides treatment for those with substance abuse problems. Brian Escobar says the clinic helped save his life after he spent years struggling with drugs and alcohol.
“When you have an addiction and you are depressed, it's not easy to say, ‘I need help,’” says Escobar. “The main thing that stopped me in the past was admitting I had a problem.”
Peggy Sicari, who heads up the clinic, says substance abuse in combination with a mental health condition can be deadly.
"[Williams] certainly reminds us that this can happen to anyone,” Sicari told News 12.
