ALBANY - State Senate Leader Dean Skelos may be ousted from his leadership position as support from his own party erodes.

Seven upstate Republican senators are calling on Skelos to step down as Senate majority leader.

Sen. Robert Ortt (R-Buffalo) says he’ll introduce a measure Monday that would force the ouster.

If Skelos does step down, Sen. John DeFrancisco of Syracuse and Sen. John Flanagan of Northport have emerged as frontrunners to replace him. Republican insiders tell News 12 Long Island that both men are close to the number of votes needed to win the post.

Long Island’s eight other state senators say they support Skelos staying on as leader.
