BAY SHORE - Police say they found a dead 6-week-old puppy tied to a garbage pail on the docks in Bay Shore last night.

Investigators say a rope was attached to the waist of the female pit-bull mix, and the other end of the rope had a chicken bone tied to it. The puppy's skull was fractured.

According to the SPCA, it is possible that the dog might have been used for some kind of ritual, or as bait for crabs.

"This is a brutal act of animal cruelty," says Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross. "We're going to do everything in our power to bring the person or persons to justice."

If caught and convicted, the puppy's killer could get up to two years behind bars.

The SPCA is offering a $1,000 reward for anyone who has information about the person who killed the puppy. People are asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
