WOODBURY - A Woodbury doctor and his wife were arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration Tuesday morning for allegedly writing and filling illegal prescriptions of oxycodone.

Dr. Salvatore Corso and his wife Lea Corso pleaded not guilty in Hempstead court during their arraignment. Dr. Corso, an orthopedic surgeon, was indicted for criminal sale of a prescription for a controlled substance. Lea Corso was charged with criminal possession of a forged instrument.

A spokesman for the Nassau District Attorney's Office says the DEA started investigating Corso in 2012. The spokesman says Corso started improperly writing prescriptions for controlled substances for his 39-year-old wife and several other individuals in 2010.

Officials say Corso continued the alleged illegal activity until he realized he was being investigated by the DEA.  They say his wife then began taking his prescription pads and forging prescriptions for herself.

According to Newsday, a plea deal is currently being worked out between prosecutors and the couple. Their attorney did not return News 12's call to comment about the case.
