HEMPSTEAD - The mayor of Muttontown and her husband surrendered to the Nassau District Attorney's Office Thursday on multiple felony charges for allegedly not paying state income taxes between 2010 and 2015.

According to the DA's office, Mayor Julianne Beckerman and her husband, Adam, did not pay $244,000 in state taxes despite making $4.5 million over that five-year span.

Defense attorney Robert Altchiler suggested the failure to pay was an oversight.

"I think the message of us all being here, is that you need to meticulously attend to all your responsibilities…and you should be seeking help of solid professionals who will give you solid advice when it relates to your taxes," he said.

County records show that liens were also filed against the Beckermans dating back to 2000 - one allegedly for unpaid federal income taxes totalling more than $34,000 for one year.

"They're in the process of becoming compliant in all regards," their attorney said when asked if the couple paid their federal taxes.

After the Beckerman's were arraigned in Hempstead court, Altchiler physically blocked a News 12 camera from following the couple out of the courtroom. Both are due back in court at the end of May.

Julianne Beckerman, 48, was re-elected village mayor in 2014 after running on the Concerned Taxpayers Party line.
