HAUPPAUGE - Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota has announced the subsurface results of test samples taken from illegal dumping debris found in the towns of Islip and Babylon.

The testing revealed that the debris discovered at an Islip town park in Brentwood and on Sage Street in Central Islip show the presence of hazardous materials, including illegal pesticides and metal contamination.

News 12 Long Island has learned some samples had levels of up to 10 times more than their permissible limits.

Spota said recent testing at Roberto Clemente Park revealed 50,000 tons of contaminated debris - 18,000 more tons of debris than previously thought. The test showed levels of asbestos, illegal pesticides and the toxic metals, lead, chromium, copper, zinc and cobalt.

The DA also said that debris dumped into wetlands on Brook Avenue in Deer Park was connected to the same individual and entities involved in the illegal dumping in the Town of Islip

Initial results also came back on the houses on Veterans Way in Islandia. No asbestos was found there, but other tests are still pending.

The DA says findings at Roberto Clemente Park and Route 111 will likely upgrade the criminal charges when an arrest is made. Spota is still not naming the company or companies responsible for the dumping.
