Cuomo: NY outages could last days

ALBANY, N.Y. - (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the number of New York utility customers without power because of Irene has inched upto over 909,000.

Without power as of Sunday night were 418,000 Long Islandcustomers, more than 101,000 in and around New York City and nearly400,000 upstaters.

Cuomo also says 10 more counties have been approved for federalassistance because of the hurricane that turned into a tropicalstorm in New York.

The following areas are now eligible for the aid: all of NewYork City and Long Island as well as the counties of Columbia,Delaware, Greene, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Schoharie, Sullivan,Ulster and Westchester counties.

National Guard troops continue to assist in clean-up operationsincluding removing downed limbs and in contacting some residentsstranded by rising waters.
