Cuomo eyes renewing 2% utility tax
Some businesses in the area say they are trying to juggle finances to keep afloat.
WOODBURY - Long Islanders are already paying some of the highest electricity rates in the nation, but Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to renew a 2 percent utility tax.
The 2 percent tax appears on bills for electricity, gas home heating oil, and propane. In 2009, then-Gov. David Paterson imposed the temporary tax, and Cuomo says he wants to extend it past the 2014 deadline.
Some businesses in the area say the tax hits them especially hard because it quickly adds up to thousands of dollars per year. The Long Island Assocation (LIA) is lobbying against a renewal of the tax on the grounds that it's hurting local businesses.
Calls regarding the tax by News 12 Long Island to the governor's office and the office of the Assembly speaker have gone unreturned.
