Cuomo declares flu emergency for NY

WOODBURY - Some Long Island pharmacies are having trouble keeping up with the demand for flu vaccines.

The flu epidemic has become so severe that Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a public health emergency and has taken the unprecedented step of allowing pharmacists to give flu shots to kids.

But pharmacist Randy Mohavir says he's having trouble getting the flu vaccine due to high demand.

Centers for Disease Control and Prevention officials say the flu is now widespread in 47 out of 50 states.

Experts say it will be weeks before they know if flu season has peaked, but there may be some good news: the latest CDC activity map lists several states that have seen a drop in flu levels, particularly in southeastern states.

Also, only 24 states were reporting high levels of flu activity, down from 29 states from the previous week.
