WOODBURY - Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday called on the federal government and the MTA to move quickly on safety improvements at rail grade crossings.

The renewed call for changes at rail crossings comes one day after a car was hit by a Metro-North train Wednesday in Bedford Hills, Westchester County.

No one was injured in the latest crash, but Cuomo said too many people have died in other rail crossing accidents. Cuomo called those deaths avoidable.

"We can design better technology at the grade crossing itself, better warnings, better entrance devices, better exit devices, better instructions because these grade crossings are confusing," Cuomo said by phone.

The governor said he had directed the MTA to present plans for grade crossing safety measures by next week.

In February 2015, a Metro-North train struck an SUV on the tracks in Valhalla, also in Westchester County, killing six people. It was the deadliest accident in the railway's history.
