MELVILLE - A 3-foot long crocodile was found in a box in Melville Tuesday.

Gerald Mosca, supervisor of the Huntington Town Animal Control Center, says he received an anonymous call at around 11 a.m. that a crocodile was left in an open box in a crowded parking lot.

"I was a little apprehensive because I've gotten these calls before and they turn out to be toys," he says.

Mosca says it took him about 10 minutes to get the animal under control.

Officials say it was the first crocodile ever recovered on Long Island.  Even though he's under 10 pounds, officials say he is extremely dangerous.

The Department of Environmental Conservation and the Suffolk SPCA have launched a joint investigation to find out who let the animal loose.
