MINEOLA - A heated hearing erupted today over a proposed GOP plan to redraw Nassau's legislative districts.

Critics have charged that plans by Republicans on the Nassau County Legislature to shift district lines and merge some districts is racist.

Attorney Fred Brewington says the Republican map seeks to take voting power away from minorities.

"What the County Legislature was proposing was a complete violation of the Voting Rights Act of 1965," Brewington says.

Presiding Officer Peter Schmitt (R-Massapequa) called accusations of racism "insulting" and said the county charter demands they redraw district lines based on the latest census results.
