ISLIP - The Islip Department of Planning & Development held an informational session for council members Thursday regarding a proposed development that would transform 452 acres of land at the old Pilgrim State property in Brentwood into apartments and retail space.

The Heartland Town Square project calls for more than 9,000 apartments and 4 million square feet of office and retail space to be built at the property located off the Sagtikos Parkway.

During the meeting, critics of the plan gathered outside Islip Town Hall. They said the project is too big and will overburden natural resources and local schools, as well as create more traffic congestion.

Developer Gerald Wolkoff said that's not going to happen.

"We are near a train station, we have buses, so we are discouraging cars," he told News 12.

After the meeting, Donna Periconi, of the Bay Shore Chamber of Commerce, voiced her disappointment about the scope of the project.

"Nobody seems to be talking about the density of 9,130 apartments. Nobody is talking about this mega city that's being built on our Long Island," she said.

Michael Capulano, of Oakdale, says the building of a large-scale development could help stop young people from leaving Long Island.

The Suffolk Planning Commission voted last month to approve the Heartland project.
