Crash spurs gas leak, evacuations in Massapequa Park

A gas leak at Friendly's closed Sunrise Highway and forced evacuations. (December 31, 2012)

MASSAPEQUA PARK - Dozens of Long Islanders were forced out of their homes and businesses today by a car accident that sparked a gas leak.

Part of Sunrise Highway was shut down both ways for about two hours today after a gas leak at Friendly's in Massapequa Park that forced the evacuation of nearby residences and businesses.

Friendly's employee Martin Grimes says it appears a customer went over the curb and hit the gas pipes on the side of the building, severing a line.

The restaurant remained closed for several hours while National Grid fixed the gas line.

Police say no one was hurt. They say it's still unclear how the driver hit the line.
