MINEOLA - Police say a crane operator suffered minor injuries to his neck and back after jumping out of the cab of a leaning crane in Mineola Wednesday afternoon.
The crane had fallen to its side on 1st Street and 2nd Avenue at a construction site at around 12:40 p.m. Two other cranes were brought to the scene to upright the tipped construction crane.
Officials say no one else was injured because the road and sidewalk were closed to pedestrians at the time.
News 12 was told that the general contractor on the construction project is Lend Lease.
Lend Lease has had a history of problems in recent years. It was the general contractor for the project where two firefighters were killed in the Deutche Bank fire in 2007. Lend Lease was also the contractor on a Harlem project that claimed the life of a 69-year-old construction worker in 2012.
Lend Lease did not return a call to comment about the incident. It is unclear why the crane tipped over.
