SMITH POINT - Battle on the Bay organizers say the county is hitting the brakes on this year's competition. The boat racing competition, which draws nearly 12,000 spectators, was scheduled to take place at Smith Point Park in Smith Point from Aug. 24 to Aug. 26. Organizers say the county parks commissioner and Suffolk County legislators approved the event in April, but then last week, they were told that their traffic plan was not detailed enough. Battle on the Bay organizers say they reached out to County Executive Steve Bellone (D-Suffolk), but have not heard back from him. At this point, they say it's too late for them to look into using a different park or bay.
