County Exec. Mangano threatens layoffs in absence of cuts

County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) warned today that it may be necessary to lay off another 800 county workers. Mangano sent a letter to all

WOODBURY - County Executive Ed Mangano (R-Nassau) warned today that it may be necessary to lay off another 800 county workers.

Mangano sent a letter to all of the county employees, stating that if the department heads refuse to cut spending by 15 percent, as many as one out of 10 workers could lose their jobs.

The county executive says the layoffs are needed to close a $310 million budget gap that has been projected for next year.

Mangano blames the budget shortfall on the bad economy, and skyrocketing health care and pension costs for county workers. In addition, he says the Legislature has never approved additional red light cameras that would have brought in revenue.

Despite Mangano's warning, Nassau CSEA President Jerry Laricchiuta says the county government simply couldn't function with 800 fewer employees.

Mangano already laid off 128 workers a few weeks ago. He says he wants to work with union leaders on more contract concessions and expects shared sacrifice. However, Laricchiuta says the county executive wants only unilateral sacrifice on the part of his members.
