Cops: Truck driver lost control, causing crash with minibus

BAITING HOLLOW - Cops say one person is dead and eight others are injured after a tractor-trailer collided with a special-needs bus on the East End.

The incident happened yesterday afternoon on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow.

Chopper 12 was over the scene where police say the truck was carrying gravel when the driver lost control and overturned.

Investigators say the truck appeared to go into the westbound lane, flipped on its side and sideswiped a minibus from the Maryhaven Center of Hope, a center for people with special needs.

Officials say one of the disabled adults was killed. Workers at the center say the person who passed away was someone involved in the organization.

Police say the victim and seven others from the Maryhaven Center of Hope were on their way home from spending the day in Riverhead.

The other passengers, along with the bus driver, aide and the truck driver were all taken to the hospital. Officials say seven out of the eight people injured are still in the hospital today.

Police are investigating what caused the driver, Robert Converse, of Bellport, to lose control. Police say they are also looking into if either driver was speeding. No driver has been charged.
