CONEY ISLAND - Police say a suspect is in custody after four people were shot in a Coney Island apartment yesterday, one of them fatally.

Investigators say that Joseph Brown, 29, walked into Apartment 5B at 2703 West 33rd St. at around 4 p.m. and began shooting. A male victim, identified as Angel Rivera, was pronounced dead by police on arrival. Three others, a woman and two males, were also shot, officials say.

The 62-year-old female was shot in the stomach and is said to be in critical condition. Police say one of the males, 24, was shot in the head and is also listed in critical condition. The other male, age 40, was treated on the scene for a graze wound to the head.

Neighbors tell News 12 that the 62-year-old woman runs a day care center out of the apartment. Police have not indicated that children were in the apartment during the time of the shooting.

Investigators are still trying to determine the connection between the victims in the shooting. Police are also working to determine a motive.
