NORTH MERRICK - Armed police officers scoured the woods along the Southern State Parkway today after a possible sighting of a dangerous pit bull that mauled a woman.

Nassau police launched an intensive search of a wooded area where eyewitness Masis O'Hanion says he spotted a pit bull at about 2 p.m., resembling the one that mauled a North Merrick woman last week.

"I told the cops and the animal control unit where the dog was and they started hunting for the dog in the backyard and then I heard the gunshots - about six or seven," he says.

Authorities have not released word on whether or not the animal was wounded by the gunfire.
