Cops rescue child, dog from icy water in Sayville

SAYVILLE - ? Officials say an 11-year-old girl and her neighbor's dog fell through the ice and into the water approximately 50 yards offshore in the Great South Bay near Candee Avenue in Sayille this afternoon.

Cops say the agency responded to the call with two ambulances, two paramedic first responders and several EMTs.

Suffolk County Police say an officer went into the water to pull the child, Sarah Thalhammer, from the ice. Cops credit ambulance company members and bystanders for assisting by pulling both the officer and the child to shore. The dog was rescued by fire department personnel and is doing OK.

The child and officer were treated for hypothermia and transported to Stony Brook University Medical Center for care and are listed in stable condition.
