NORTH AMITYVILLE - Police are searching for the gunman who shot a young man in the leg in North Amityville.
A witness says she was having a barbecue at her Avon Drive home when she and her guests heard a bang. When they went to look outside, she says several people had gathered there.
"I've never seen the boy before, don't know him, don't know who shot him, don't know why," said the woman, who didn't want to give her name.
The 23-year-old victim was not seriously hurt.
Suffolk police say they are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related. Community activists say they are planning a march against violence either way.
It comes as both Nassau and Suffolk police deal with violence connected to gangs, including several recent homicides in Hempstead. It's estimated there are 2,700 Blood and Crips gang members on Long Island, and some say those are just the ones that police are aware of.
