FREEPORT - Police say that a body was found today in the trunk of a car parked at Willow and Lakeview avenues in Freeport. According to police, the car, a Nissan Maxima, was engulfed in flames at the time the discovery was made. Police say a passerby saw the fire and called 911 just before 10:30 a.m.Jimmy Olin says he was returning to work at the Freeport Water Department across the street from where the car was parked when he saw the commotion. Olin and a few of his co-workers grabbed extinguishers and started to battle the fire until the fire department arrived.According to Olin, firefighters attempted to open the trunk, but couldn't. They used a tool to open the incinerated compartment, and that's when they saw the body inside. Police and K-9 dogs continued to comb the area this afternoon before the vehicle was taken away.Investigators say the victim was so severely burned that they could not immediately determine the person's race or gender. The cause of death also remains unknown.
